The Book!
Victor Hazan will be in our shop on July 26th, to finish out his book tour. Celebrating their final book together, "INGREDIENTI: Marcella's Guide to the Market", Victor will be here to answer questions, perhaps tell a tale or two, and to sign a few books.
We will have a few dishes to reminisce over and a little Italian wine to go with.
Now, if you don't happen to be in Seattle at the end of July to join us, you can still get a book, signed by Victor, and personalized too! Not a "book plate". Let us know "to whom" and we will do our best to accommodate! (Please no requests about how long you've been friends or how "great your restaurant is", we will reject those for sure!)
So, think ahead and get more than one copy, one for a birthday, one for Thanksgiving and multiples for December gift giving! This perfectly intimate sized book is written with personal insight and ideas to inspire and answer questions about ingredients. And even though you might know them, the insight into the ingredients is wonderful and personal. It's a book that's fun to spot read though, if time permitted one might read it cover to cover.

When Marcella stopped in Seattle in 2008 to present her memoir, Amarcord, Eliza and Tim opened the doors of their shop and warehouse to host an unforgettable reception and generous tasting of their specialties. Marcella was greatly moved. It was the last event of her career, which ended with her life a few years later.
Before her passing, Marcella had written a guide to the market, her favorite subject, which is being published posthumously by Scribner. On the occasion, Chefshop is hosting another extraordinary party. There will be no more books coming from Marcella to celebrate here, making this a unique gastronomic and literary event that no one will want to miss."

Making a crunchy granola (harmless hippie food of the 60's) that's sweetened with sorghum and honey has been a goal of mine since I had a delicious version a friend made in NYC last time I was there.
Getting started meant hunting and experimenting with tons of recipes. The task was a bit daunting, since so many are bent to be super healthy or super candy sweet like. Rarely are they easy to chew with a great bite and crunch. And gluten free would be nice.
And then Angela, (her company is OhSoGood! by Angela) walked in with her CocoNutola recipe in hand! How excellent the timing!! It is everything I wanted and more!
The recipe is really easy to do and a bit therapeutic during the bake and toss section. Get the process down and you can twist it up and make it match your desires!

Simple and easy pasta dishes are wonderful summer fare. As the summer harvest gets underway, you only need just one to top a pasta of your choice! A little fresh olive oil and sea salt and all things are good! Or take a little garlic, olive oil, capers and a ripe tomato, heat in a pan and drop the al denté pasta in for a quick swirl and done!

The giant Reed
Avocados like these are only found in just a few places in the world. And ones this big take an attention to detail that only farmers like Peter and Bonnie can achieve.
Last year, the Reed avocados they shipped out averaged 1.27 pounds! Now that is one big fruit! And the fruit-to-pit-ratio outstrips those other little Avocados. But most importantly, the flavor is out of this world! Rich, buttery, smooth are only the basics of how different they are. Half of a Reed is dinner!

The Reeds are falling from the trees because of the early and unusual excessive heat in the groves of Southern California. Though we aren't shipping them quite yet, the word from Peter this morning is that our avocados aren't quite ready, though some are for the general market. What this means is that we could be shipping Reed Avocados as soon as in a week or in the weeks to come. The second part of this equation is that the season could be very, very short. So if you are interested please get your order in ASAP.
As always, first come, first serve and when harvest ends that's all there is for 2016!

Elderflower Sweet Syrup
