This variety of garlic is grown from original stock starting in 2009, all at Mark's farm in Arlington, Washington. It's a new offering this year (2018). Almost 10 years in the making, but well worth the wait. A great "born in the Pacific Northwest" garlic with strong overtones, all purpose, great for cooking or canning, and easy to peel.

Nougat de Montelimar France Nougat de Montelimar

In France, everyone associates the southern town of Montélimar with nougat, that delicious confection of honey, sugar, egg whites and roasted almonds. Nougat has long been produced in Montélimar, but fame arrived in the 19th century, when both train travel and vacation time for workers became de rigueur in France. When trains on route to Mediterranean beaches stopped at Montélimar, the travel-weary passengers bought nougat for a pick-me-up snack.

This Week's Recipes

Rick's Beef Stew Recipe

This recipe came from a locally produced cookbook, 40 Seasonal Soups, published by Sacred Heart Shelter. All the recipes were "donated" by local chefs and food purveyors -- including this one, from Master Butcher, Rick Frier of A&J Meats.

This recipe reminds me of the stew my mother used to make. So comforting -- and so good. The key is using great stew meat trimmed by an experienced butcher so that you end up with more meat and less gristle.

Cottage Pie Recipe

Cottage pie refers to an English meat pie made with minced beef and a crust made from mashed potato. A variation on this dish using minced lamb is generally known as "Shepherd's Pie." Although, the distinction between the two may well be an example of folk etymology, based solely on the fact that shepherds clearly herd sheep, not cattle.
